A Typical Friday

After every one of them left,
I thought I would cry.

Everyone expects you to cry,
don’t they?

Cry for when they leave,
as if you are somehow no longer
whole. No longer who you were
before anyone walked into the
sweet tragedy that is your life.

Around twenty minutes later,
after the catastrophe,
after I puck out their
words and seconds from
under my skin,
I stand under a cold shower
and scrub them off,
vigorously, violently.

Instead of saline water
cascading from the bleak
edge of my eyes,
a blander form of it,
neutral, gray, unfeeling
one poured down my head.

Once I abandon my bathroom,
leaving cloudy marks
on glasses and windows,
I rearrange my room,
clean out my drawers,
light a candle,
brew strong coffee,
and go ahead with
a typical Friday.
